Ah Meng is gone forever...

Thumbs up for Ah Meng.We will miss you...

I think most of you have probably heard the sad news already yesterday on the news. But I didnt catch the news yesterday so I only knew the story today when I saw the headline 'Ah Meng Dies' and a big picture of her on the front page of 'The Straits Times'.Its such a sad news I think for everyone else because Ah Meng was and I still think will forever be a great friend in our heart.

Almost all the local main newspaper has an article on her death today and I think that clearly shows how we really like her.The reason for her death was of old age,she was 50. but some say she was 48,it wouldnt make much difference anyway.Ive done some research on Orang Utan's life expectancy and according to a website that has a lot of information about Orang Utan, their life expectancy is about 45 years old or more. And it was no surprise to some, their her death was inevitable and former zoo keeper who took care of Ah Meng between 1981 and 2005said that,it was expected because she was very old.Ah Meng leaves behind children of her own,she has two sons and two daughters, actually 3 daughters but one of them died in 2004,as well as six grandchilren.

Ah Meng of course was an icon of Singapore's zoo and she have met a lot of celebrity before which includes the likes of Michael Jackson,David Copperfield, and Prince Philip among others.I am sure all the celebrity that have met her before had fallen in love with her too.Ah Meng is also an 'highly intelligent and could learn anything just be observing it' according to Mr Nair, the former zoo keeper who took care of her for most of the time. And I think if you have seen her on the news or met her before, you would agree with Mr Nair.Ah Meng will be buried near the keepers rest area, something that has been done with two small animals before because of her relationship with the zookeepers,as special arrangements are sometimes made for zookeepers who have grown attached to animals that has recently died.As a tribute, the zoo also plans to name its next newborn orang utan Ah Meng Junior, which I think fits perfectly well.If you are a really big fan of Ah Meng and wish to see him for one last time, there will be a special memorial service held at the zoo for Ah Meng tomorrow from 9am to 11am.

I think Ah Meng is more than just an animal,I think she is a friend to each and everyone of us,and I think she can be consider as an icon for Singapore as well.I believe she will be greatly miss not just by the people who have work with her before, but as well as those who have met her,and even if you havnt met her before,Im sure you have heard her name before.Lets hope that a new 'Ah Meng' will be discover in the future, but whatever it is,Ah Meng can never be replace in our heart. If you have any great experience with Ah Meng that you might want to share, please feel welcome to do so.But for now,RIP Ah Meng.
