Singapore Telecommunications Limited (SingTel) yesterday announced that it has won exclusive rights to broadcast UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup 2009-2012 on its mobile, internet and mio TV platforms. In addition,SingTel also plans to stream UEFA Champions League games both ‘live’ and on-demand on mio TV,and the Internet through the IDEAS portal http://www.ideas.singtel.com/ .It will also offer clips on its mobile service.
So basically, what this mean is that if youre a Singtel mobile subscriber, you will probably most likely be able to catch some of the best actions from the Champions League and the UEFA Cup on your mobile anytime you want. And if you subscribe to mio TV as well, you will be able to watch the matches from your television. Then you may ask right, whats the use of subscribing to mio TV when most of you are now subscribing to Starhub cable TV which also airs both the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup on the various sports channels such as Supersports,ESPN,and StarSports.Well Ive got some bad news for you.StarHub has said it did not bid for the broadcast rights for the Champions league for the 2009 season onwards, therefore, you will not be able to catch some of the best European teams in action from next 2 season onwards on the Starhub cable TV.Why they had decided not to bid for it,I have no idea. They said they had not bid for the rights to telecast the Champions League game,so I think it doesnt affect the UEFA Cup matches.
But you may still catch the action on the two cable channels however,on ESPN and STAR Sports, which will continue to broadcast the Champions League till May 2009.It will not affect the other football programes such as the FA Cup,England international home matches, and the Asian Football Confederation matches. So sad to say from May 2009 onwards, the only way you want to catch the Champions League matches is by subscribing to mio TV or maybe go to the IDEAS portal or change your mobile subscribers to Singtel. But of course if you are interested in watching the goals only, which I dont think many of you will enjoy, then there are other ways such as finding it on Youtube. As for me,Im already a Singtel mobile subscriber but I dont have mio TV.If you never heard of mio TV before,it is the Singtel version of Starhub cable vision, but with less entertainment but cheaper price since it just started some years ago if Im not wrong.
Im disappointed that Starhub has decided not to bid for telecast right to show the Champions League matches from he 2009-2010 season onwards but on the other hand, being a Singtel mobile subscriber,Im happy with the news.I dont exactly watch the Champions League because my favourite teams is not used to playing regularly in the competition as before, only Inter Milan is consistantly particpating in it,but Newcastle, maybe UEFA Cup for now unfortunately. But for most of you who are Arsenal and Man Utd fan,Im sure this news is going to be a big blow.I expect a lot of complaints from Starhub cable subscribers in the coming months ahead. We already had to pay more money for the English Premier League broadcast, now we cant even watch the Champions League on Starhub Cable Vision in the future. If you so desperate, then of course you can subscribe to both cable vision. If you have anything to say on this issue, please do so because I would love from you by leaving a comment or you can simply tag the chatbox beside there.Till then, take care and enjoy the rest of the European football while you can.
