U.S. Democratic Presidential candidate, and my man,Senator Barack Obama, yesterday received a big boost in his campaign.Declaring that Sen. Barack Obama is an "extraordinary American," Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico endorsed Obama for the Democratic nominee for president on Friday. And as you know if you have followed the Presidential race from the beginning,Gov.Richardson was one of Obama's former competition in the race, but he quit the race early because of disappointing support in the early rounds.
And since then, both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton have been continuosly asking for Gov.Richardson for his endorsement and it was only yesterday that he decided to announce that he would be endorsing Barack Obama.Whats surprising about this news is that Gov.Richardson is more of a close friend to the Clintons than Obama,so if anyone was guessing which way he would go to,they would probably say he is going to endorse Hillary.Richardson was secretary of energy and U.S. ambassador to the United Nations under President Bill Clinton. He said he remains friends with the Clintons, and watched the Super Bowl with Bill Clinton this year.So definitely, this news is a big blow to them and a huge boost for Obama. You might also want to know that Richardson is the nation's only Hispanic governor.Hispanics have tended to support Sen. Hillary Clinton in her quest for the Democratic nomination as seen with the previous round of voting.Looking at the remaining states ahead, there is not much of Hispanics left to vote so this news would most probably affect the people's decision to go for him. However,Richardson's endorsement may be more important for its influence on superdelegates, the nearly 800 Democratic party officials whose backing will be essential for either candidate to win the party's nomination.Whether that is true or not, only time will tell.Richardson is the second former Democratic presidential contender to endorse Obama, after Sen. Chris Dodd of Connecticut. Two other former candidates,Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware and former Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina, have remained neutral.None of the dropouts has endorsed Clinton however.
The Clinton campaign responded to this news by saying that at the end of the day,its the voters, and not the endorsements that will determine who is going to win the race, but somehow deep inside, you can feel their disappointment and frustration regarding this development.Being an Obama fan,of course I was please with this news.I would also like to point out that Gov.Richardson has been reported as being one of the contenders to be the running mate if Obama wins the nominee but theres has been nothing said on Obama's part of course. Some say that his endorsement of Barack Obama was because he would like to gain Obama's support to be his running mate if he is successful but I dont think that is the case.I think Gov.Richardson can see Obama as being a great leader for America. For me,I dont really care about the endorsements because I dont think it has exactly a big impact at all.The people must remember its the candidate they are voting for and not the person who is endorsing them, but Ill take anything good that comes for now after everything that has happened recently about Obama and his former pastor.Hopefully,it hasnt affect his campaign much.Cant wait for the next round of contest.
