Today,on the 22nd of April,we celebrate the annual World Earth Day.This event is celebrated each year to mark the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970.The event was proposed by Gaylord Nelson,a U.S. Senator in September 1969,at a conference in Seattle to organise a nationwide grassroots demonstration on the environment.
At the time,Americans were slurping leaded gas through massive V8 sedans. The problems of pollution was extremely bad with no regards for the laws whatsoever.Air pollution was commonly accepted as the smell of prosperity.Environment was a word that appeared more often in spelling bees than on the evening news. However, during the first Earth Day on 22 April,1970,things started to change for the better.20 million Americans took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment.People started to come together and realise that they are fighting for a common goal, which is to create a better environment for a better place to live in.The event was a huge success. The first Earth Day led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the clean air, clean water, and endangered species acts.Im not sure whether the policy has actually work but anyway, lets move on.Sen. Nelson was then awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest honor given to civilians in the United States for his role as Earth Day founder.
Each year during the Earth Day,events are being organised across many part of the world to educate the masses on various environmental actions that can be done to improve the conditions of the environment. You can do your part too to help the environment.Simple things like recycling stuffs or using a green bag to shop can go a long way at creating a better environment. For more environmental tips, you may visit here http://www.epa.gov/earthday/tips.htm where you will be able to find all sorts of information on helping the environment.Nevertheless, this Earth Day,the message seems to be: buy better, not more, and make sure those you shop with are green all the way to the core.
