Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim came out of hiding Monday, and says he has damaging evidence that proves senior members of the government faked evidence for sodomy charges against him. He said that he have new evidence regarding the charges made against him back in 1998. Anwar was the heir apparent to former premier Mahathir Mohamad until 1998, when he was sacked and charged for corruption and sodomy. The sodomy conviction was overturned, but the corruption verdict was never lifted, barring him from running for political post until this year.
Now, Anwar has rejected a new sodomy charges and he also said that he had evidence of threats on his life that caused him to go into hiding at the Turkish embassy in Kuala Lumpur. It is reported that he was to stage a public rally on Tuesday to fight back over allegations of sodomy that he says were orchestrated by the government to keep its grip on power. He has since lodged a defamation suit over the allegations. Anwar is coming out swinging at the government of Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. Prime Minister Abdullah's United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) helms a national coalition that has ruled the country since the country declared independence in 1957.
But if you remember the recent election, Anwar's opposition alliance made a surprisingly strong showing in March, grabbing one-third of the seats in parliament and undermining the coalition's longtime hold on power in this nation of 25 million. Now that a ban on public office after his earlier conviction has expired, Anwar says he was poised to enter parliament in a by-election when the government concocted the latest allegations by a 23-year-old male aide. Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi insisted the government was not responsible for the accusation, saying there was no conspiracy "to cause (Anwar) trouble or harass him or raise such issues to undermine him." Malaysia's Deputy Prime Minister, Najib Tun Razak have also denied any involvement in the sodomy charges. [End of report]
I was completely shocked when I heard this news. As you probably know already, Im an Anwar supporter so I didn't saw this coming. I don't know who is right or who is lying right now because nothing is clear yet. What I can understand now is that according to Anwar, he has evidence to prove that the sodomiy charges the government made against him back in 1998 was fake and it is probably true because the charges were overturned soon after but he have no evidence to prove that the new sodomy charges are fake as well even though he insists that it is fake and that the charges were fabricated to prevent him from exposing corrupt officials. I don't know if he is speaking the truth, but I dont have any reason not to believe him as well.
The timing of the charges is certainly questionable though. I mean his party had performed well in the recent election and he is planning to win a parliament seat in the by-election and gather enough defectors from the ruling coalition to be able to take over as prime minister. And adding to the fact that the popularity of Prime Minister Abdullah and his UMNO ruling party has gone down in recent months, it seems like Anwar does have a point in saying that the sodomy charges is a government campaign to keep him from challenging Abdullah to lead the nation. I am not saying that UMNO or any of its party members is behind the charges but Im just suggesting all the posibilities that I can think of. However, if the charges against Anwar is true, then that has got to be a big blow to him and his party. If he is found guilty, I dont think there is any chance that he will make a comeback to politics anymore nor will I continue to support him. Sodomy is a serious offence in Malaysia and is punishable by 20 years imprisonment. I was really glad when his ban from politics was over but this is not what I am looking for, so I really hope that the charges are false and those who are really responsible for the confusion are punished.
But right now, its anyone guess who might be saying the right thing or who might be lying. I have a lot of faith in Anwar and I dont think he is trying to run away from the charges. The reason he took refuge in the Turkish embassy was not because he is wrong and trying to hide, but because he feared for his safety. I'm hoping that the truth will be out soon so that he can focus on his plan to contest for the Prime Minister position instead of having to fight for charges that might not be true. It's definitely going to be an interesting weeks ahead and things will be much clearer Im sure.

and why did he have to lie?
Did he pay off Bala savvily,
or threaten to C4 his family?
What acts could be more despised?
With his money, we’re not surprised;
after all, he's such a bully beast,
to him and him alone, at least,
magic words that cannot apply–
are useful for making rivals die.
